Bashmet orchestra to perform melodies from the war years for the first time on Mamayev kurgan on May 8
According to Vladimir Popkov, Vice-Governor of Volgograd Region, the concert will be held in the evening with the traditional action "Light of the Great Victory" integrated into it.
For the first time, the All-Russian Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of People's Artist of the USSR Yuri Bashmet, will perform melodies and songs from the war years at a large concert in Volgograd on Mamayev Kurgan on May 8, on the eve of the 75th Victory anniversary. Vladimir Popkov, Vice-Governor of Volgograd Region, spoke about this with TASS.
"A large-scale event with music, poems and performances will be held at the Lake of Tears on Mamayev Kurgan on May 8. About 600 musicians, performers and actors in all will be involved. We've never had such an event. The central theme is the anniversary of the Great Victory. The songs and melodies from the Great Patriotic War will be performed by the All-Russian Youth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Yuri Bashmet," the Vice-Governor of Volgograd Region said. The Culture Committee of Volgograd Region said that Bashmet Orchestra had presented concerts in Volgograd before, but that such a large-scale performance by the orchestra on Mamayev Kurgan would be a first.
Popkov said that the concert on Mamayev Kurgan was included in the federal agenda for commemorating the 75th Victory anniversary and was a television project for one of the leading federal TV channels. According to the organizers, the maestro himself will be at the conductor's podium. The equipment for this large-scale festive event will be shipped to Volgograd from Moscow and St. Petersburg using 80 heavy trucks.
According to the Vice-Governor, the concert will be held in the evening. The traditional action "Light of the Great Victory" will be integrated into it. Alexey Dementyev, Director of the Stalingrad Battle Panorama Museum, who supervises the memorial complex on Mamayev Kurgan, said that during the commemoration of the Victory anniversary, the 85-meter Mother Russia Calls! statue would be illuminated with modern 3D projectors for the first time since its restoration. The monument restoration began in 2017, and the work will be completed at the end of March. The opening ceremony following the large-scale restoration will be held at the end of April.
