REMEMBRANCE CANDLE MEMORIAL OPENED TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF LENINGRAD'S RESIDENTS AND DEFENDERS

Открытие монумента в честь жителей и защитников блокадного Ленинграда «Свеча памяти»

The Remembrance Candle Memorial was unveiled by Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to commemorate the heroic residents and defenders of the Siege of Leningrad.

The ceremony was attended by Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lyon, and St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov.

The monument was engineered by a group of Saint Petersburg and Israeli architects and installed in the Sacher Park located in the center of Jerusalem. The foundation of the monument contains a capsule with soil from the Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery—the largest mass grave of World War II.

The building of the memorial was initiated by the veteran's community of the German-Soviet War in Israel and siege survivors and supported by Jewish public agencies from both Russia and Israel.
